Description
While many of us at the Houston Botanic Garden know Kimberly Meyer as a beekeeper for our HBeeG bees or as the Farm Manager of Shamba Ya Amani / Farm of Peace, an all-woman collective of immigrants, refugees, and local Houstonians, she is also a writer. In her newest book, Accidental Sisters: Refugee Women Struggling Together for a New American Dream, readers join her on a journey with six refugee women as they navigate a program here in Houston for single mothers overseen by Alia Altikrity, a former refugee from Iraq, and experience the guiding philosophy of Alia: that small, direct, meaningful acts of mutual care are the foundation for a flourishing community.
While celebrating the sanctuary the women eventually find, the book critiques the US refugee resettlement program for its insistence on rapid self-sufficiency and offers an alternative American Dream rooted in sisterhood and solidarity. Immersive and intimate, Accidental Sisters inspires hope for a way forward in the face of pandemics, political inaction, and climate change. This is your chance to meet the author and some special guests whose stories make up the book.
Please remember that Houston Botanic Garden offers free parking and our events are often in climate controlled environments. If you have specific questions please email us at education@hbg.org
